What is vertical lift bridges?

Vertical lift bridges are types of moveable bridges that are designed to allow watercraft to pass under them. These bridges are commonly used in waterways that have heavy maritime traffic or in areas where it is not possible to build a fixed bridge.

A vertical lift bridge consists of two large towers or pylons, on either side of the bridge, with a movable span or drawbridge suspended between them. The movable span or drawbridge is raised and lowered by means of counterweights and cables that run over top of the towers.

When the bridge is lowered, it provides a clear passage for road and rail traffic. When a ship or boat needs to pass, the bridge is raised, and the span is lifted vertically until it is high enough to allow the vessel to pass underneath.

Vertical lift bridges are used in many parts of the world, including the United States, Canada, Germany, Japan, and China. They are considered to be very reliable and can last for many years with proper maintenance.
